How To: Quit or Close an App on your MacBook

HOW TO CLOSE AN APP ON THE MACBOOK
  • To close an app normally, simply choose Quit from the App menu
  • Apps that don't produce files, such as Disk Utility, System Preferences, Dictionary, etc. quit when you close their windows by clicking on the RED dot
  • Most applications must be closed by selecting "File -> Quit" from the menu bar
  • You could also press Command-Q.
  • It's not a good idea to forcibly close applications via Activity Monitor or Force Quit unless you absolutely have to, as this could corrupt any files the application had open at the time.
If you can create documents, then closing windows doesn't quit the app so you can open or create another without the burden of relaunching the app.
